Lionel Messi launches his 'Messiverse' NFT art collection
Argentine football star Lionel Messi has launched his own collection of non-fungible tokens (NFTs), that were created in his image by digital designer BossLogic. It's to go on sale on Friday.
Messi, 34 is shown as a superhero, a king and as a Greek titan in such works as "Man from the Future," "Worth the Weight," and "The King Piece" featuring career highlights.
BossLogic is known for his graphic work with Marvel Studios and Disney.
An NFT is a form of digital crypto collectable that uses blockchain to record the ownership status of digital objects, such as images, text and videos. Anyone can view the item, but only the buyer of an NFT has the status of being its owner.
The market for NFTs has really taken off recently. This year, Christie's auction house sold a digital work by the futuristic artist known as Beeple for practically $70 million.
"Art is like football. Eternal," Messi quipped on his Twitter account announcing the launch of his collection.
Works in the collection entitled "Messiverse" will be available for purchase on the Ethernity Chain platform.
Messi left Barcelona last week after 20 years to join PSG. His signing-on fee includes some of the French club's cryptocurrency fan tokens.
