VAN GOGH PAINTING STOLEN

According to museum officials, a painting by artist Vincent van Gogh has been stolen from the Singer Laren museum in the Netherlands.

At around 3.15am on Sunday 29th March, thieves broke into the museum and stole the artwork which features the vicarage garden in Nuenen, entitled 'Spring Garden'. It was painted in 1884.

The painting was on loan to the Singer Laren Museum from Groninger Museum. No other pieces were touched and so it appears that it was deliberately targeted.

Evert van Os, the Director said the institution which houses the collection of William and Anna Singer is said to have been angry, shocked, and sad at the theft of the artwork

Located in the northern Dutch city of Groningen, the museum said in a statement: "The work from 1884, oil on paper on panel (marouflé), is the only painting by Van Gogh in the collection of the Groninger Museum.The investigation is currently in full swing and no more can be said about it due to the police investigation."

Police are investigating the theft of the artwork whose value is considerable although a valuation was not given. The Singer Laren museum is currently closed under measures to slow the spread of the coronavirus which may have left the museum more vulnerable to thieves.
